Go to AnnualCreditReport.com — the only official free source. Pull Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Do NOT use Credit Karma for disputes — it uses VantageScore, not the FICO lenders use. Print every page.
Go line by line. Circle late payments, collections, charge-offs, bankruptcies, incorrect balances, wrong statuses, accounts that are not yours. Write down the creditor, account number, bureau, and what is wrong.
For every incorrect item, send a written dispute letter via certified mail with return receipt. The bureau has 30 days to investigate. If they cannot verify, they must remove it. This is federal law (FCRA).
For accounts you owe: ask for a pay-for-delete — you pay, they remove the mark. Get it in writing BEFORE you pay. If they won't delete, ask for a goodwill adjustment.
Credit utilization = 30% of your score. Get every card below 30% of the limit. Below 10% is better. A $500 balance on a $500 limit is killing you. Pay it to $50 and watch your score jump in 30 days.
Open a secured credit card — $200-$500 deposit becomes your limit. Use it for gas or groceries only. Pay the full balance monthly. After 6-8 months, you have fresh positive history on all 3 bureaus.
Check scores monthly. Dispute new errors. Keep utilization low. Never miss a payment — one 30-day late drops your score 60-110 points. After 90 days, call Dr. Rob for a mortgage readiness check.
